I admit to not being fully aware of what was going on until it happened to someone I loved. This in no way diminishes the severity of their situation or the urgency with which I hope to accomplish change in this flawed system. With that said, here is what I am doing: I have volunteered to be a spiritual adviser to women at the prison, I am working to get good books to the libraries and on having the voices of the women heard through this blog. This is beyond my means, however; so I am seeking support through starting a charity. I have called it Trapped Girls, started a GoFundMe of the same name and have set up a separate account and mailing address. So far I have received $190. Thank you to my supporters. I am asking for you, whoever you are, to please consider helping. Let me make my case.
Oklahoma incarcerates women at a higher rate than any state, yet offers little assistance after doing so. There are two programs offered to women in prisons, RTP (Regimented Training Program) and HWR (Helping Women Recover). Of these, only HWR is a true rehabilitation program as RTP is a bootcamp originally created for men. Last time I checked, treating women like men hasn’t been very helpful in diminishing recidivism. Upon returning to society the women have few programs of support and many fall back on the very men who got them into trouble in the first place.
I would like to change A LOT. My charity, Trapped Girls, seeks to provide support during and after a woman serves time. I realize this is a lot to take on, but without thinking big these women really are trapped. Many remain in a cycle of hopelessness and despair. They are fully capable of more – and giving them just a little when they need it most will give them the confidence and boost they need to get out of the trap for good. They need someone besides bad influences to turn to in their time of desperation. I am asking for it to be you instead of a pimp or a drug dealer, because this is what I am hearing from them. And I have heard some pretty real stuff lately. Women deserve rehabilitation not bootcamp – and they deserve help and positive attention, not to be encouraged by drug dealers and pimps.
